Arts students far exceed the state fine arts course requirement (.5 unit) in their specialties. Math/Science students shall earn at least 1.5 fine arts course units by choosing among the following offerings, which in most cases are available to all students:
Performance Attendance (Grades 7-12) All students and faculty are required to attend major performance by the fine arts departments each year. (No credit awarded)
AP Art History (Grade 11 or 12) - A one-year chronological survey of World Art History, Pre-history through Contemporary. The accompanying text is the university standard Gardner’s Art Through the Ages, which is supplemented with additional text. A requisite course for the Visual Arts major, it is open as an elective for all others. AP credit available to students passing the annual AP Art History exam. (1 unit)
Introduction to Creative Writing (Grades 9-12) An introductory course for non-majors interested in poetry and fiction writing. Students learn the basic elements of each genre, focusing on poetry in the fall and fiction during the spring semester. On a regular basis, participants submit original work for critique by fellow students. Also, they complete a collection of revised writings to be turned in as a project at the end of each semester. (.5 unit per semester elective)
Tech Theatre (Grades 9-12) This course for non-majors teaches technical theatre fundamentals such as lighting, construction and sound. Students paticipate in the set up and running of ASFA sponsored events like Dance department performances. They hang lights, set up platforming and help to run the shows. Students assist in at least three performances each semester. Other requirements include attending performance by Theatre Arts and one by the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. (.5 unit per semester)
Art Fundamentals/Dimensions (Grades 9-12) A one-semester non-major studio course that presents the elements of Art (line, shape, value, texture and color ). Some drawing, a dash of painting, some 3-D work, some art appreciation for flavor and a field trip or two for good measure. (.5 per semester unit elective)
Jazz Dance for Non-Majors (Grades 9 – 12) Emphasizes body coordination, alignment, and movement combinations that exemplify contemporary jazz dance styles at a beginning level. (.5 unit per semester elective)
Writing for Film (Grades 9 - 12) In this intensive writing workshop, we will take a story from initial concept to a complete first-draft of a screenplay. Preference given to juniors and seniors. Introduction to Creative Writing and The Art of Filmmaking are advantageous but not prerequisites. (.5 unit elective)
9-12: Geometric Patterns in Quilting* - The principles of geometry in quilt making. A hands-on course, yes, you will make a quilt. Open to all students. (.5 per semester)
