The Alabama School of Fine Arts is pleased to present “STRANGER: Where Ever You Go, There You Are” an exhibition of recent work by Jim Burnett. Subdivided into three fantastical urban centers - Fubarville, Tech Town, and Screw City - the artist employs juxtaposition to address our culture and its ideological inconsistencies with issues such as the arts, and its relation to technology. Human and non-human elements are used to create figures which inhabit these townships. The tactile quality of the paint is restricted almost entirely as the artist forces paint to mimic graphic severity. This juxtaposition calls into question the problematic tendency to elevate the so-called “fine” over the “applied” arts. Mr. Burnett’s technical finesse pokes fun at this traditional point of view.
The exhibition will run from October 25 through December 19, 2012, with an opening reception for the artist Thursday, October 25, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Vulcan Materials Gallery. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. For additional information, please contact Cumbee Tyndal
