Our dynamic and evolving Health and Wellness Program (HWP) supports students, faculty and staff in many areas, including but not limited to Food, Fitness, and F.U.N. (Functional Understanding Necessary). The program director is Will Marble, whose office is located in the west dance studio.
The Alabama School of Fine Arts has high expectations of our students. We believe in the success potential of each student we admit. Everyone at ASFA is afforded an opportunity to be a part of a strong community while exploring his or her own unique individuality.
Through direct collaboration with our registered dietitian, Melissa Donaldson, the HWP focuses on how food and nutrition affect many aspects of learning and life. We place emphasize physical fitness, as well. Finding time and creating time for fitness is challenging, but we do have many opportunities available for all. Through the HWP we also facilitate many F.U.N. programs designed to build and impart meaning behind the the enjoyment, including an understanding of all individuals regardless of differences. We have much to learn from one another, and we feel it is our responsibility to find those lessons as best we can.
The Health and Wellness Program is designed to meet and exceed all state standards in Health and Physical Education. Having curricular goals for the HWP is only part of our overall focus. Knowing students individually and understanding their personal health concerns and needs are also target outcomes. We accomplish all this through creative programming and a full time nurse, Mary Richburg, whose office is on the first floor near the cafeteria. The nurse helps with emergency medical needs, current health records and screening, and collaboratively setting up needs-based educational sessions and presenters.
Health and Wellness is woven into the fabric of the ASFA experience and allows enough flexibility to address topics that are timely and appropriate. Welcome to the journey!
