Russell Hehn

Hi! Welcome to Mr. Hehn’s English class!

This is my first year teaching English at ASFA, and I am so excited and honored to be part of this community of learners.

I’m a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and Clemson University where I studied Creative Writing and Children’s and Young Adult literature. I taught English Composition and worked in writing centers at the University of Southern Mississippi, Samford University, and the University of Alabama-Birmingham between 2009 and 2015. I worked in advertising for several years before starting my own all-electric lawn care company, and now I’m back to my first love: teaching.

I am also a fiction writer, publishing work in small magazines like McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, the Barcelona Review, and Roi Faineant Press.

This year my ninth graders will be reading about monsters: werewolves, bigfoots (bigfeet?), minotaurs, changelings, giant sentient My Little Ponies, and all kinds of cryptids that will require us to think and write about fear, bravery, diversity, strength, and love. My eighth graders will be reading about outsiders: superpowered weirdos, refugees, strangers in strange lands and, yes, The Outsiders.

I’m looking forward to working with you!
